Tasmania Enterprise MagazineThe Ashbolts have farmed in the Derwent Valley for nearly three decades, seeing radical changes in both the climate and farm economics. They were traditional farmers growing vegetables for the fresh market and potatoes and poppies for processing companies on limited areas of land.
"Elderberry extract has been proven to fight the flu. A Norwegian study found that patients who took elderberry recovered from the flu four days faster than those in the control group. Symptoms were also less severe, with no major side effects.
"Corporate farming was taking over Australia," says Annie. She and Robert were determined to stem the industrial tide and return the farm to its small-scale roots, planting groves of olive and elder-flower trees. They now produce a beautiful olive oil, fruity and raw with notes of mown grass and apple. It is widely regarded as one of Australia's best.
Annie Ashbolt thinks island people are innovative and entrepreneurial out of necessity. She is certainly a good example. Tired of accepting the low prices offered by supermarkets and processors, Annie and Bob Ashbolt decided to do some value adding on their 400 hectare Derwent Valley farm. "We wanted to have control in how we operated the farm and we wanted to conserve our soils and not use toxic sprays, so we decided on tree crops," says Annie.
Tasmania's olive industry may be small compared with other states but its olivegrowers more than match the mainland for passion.
